About Us

We are a married couple working on the behavioral ecology of nonhuman primates since more than 20 years. We have worked under various conditions (lab, semi-free, provisioned, wild) with different primate species (callitrichines, macaques, colobines). Our approach to the behavioral ecology of nonhuman primates is question-oriented (not species) and multidisciplinary including behavior, ecology, food content, genetics, and hormones.

Carola & Andreas Primate Behavioral Ecology

Carola's research interests [cv] are concentrated on male and female reproductive tactics and success, ecological influences on social relationships and reproduction, competition, and social organization in Old World monkeys. She has worked on Barbary macaques (semi-free) as well as Hanuman langurs in India [degree related research] and Nepal.

Andreas' research [cv] focuses on evolution of sociality and social behavior, competition, feeding ecology, reproduction, and mating strategies of nonhuman primates. He has worked on callitrichines (lab) [degree related research] and on Hanuman langurs in Nepal.

Currently we are investigating the socio-ecology of Phayre’s leaf monkeys at Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, northeastern Thailand. Other projects concern for example:

· game theoretic models on infanticide and dominance hierarchies; together with Mark Broom, Department of Mathematics & Centre for the Study of Evolution, University of Sussex, UK

· tests of predictions of evolutionary models of female social relationships; together with Jennifer Burns, Eileen Larney, Amy Lu & Brandon Wheeler

· comparative socioecology of Hanuman langurs testing predictors of group size and social organization; together with Jason Kamilar, Department of Anthropology, Washington University, MO & Theresa Franz, University of Maryland

· life history and reproduction of captive silvered leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus cristatus); together with Nichole Shelmidine of WCS’ Prospect Park Zoo & Colleen McCann of WCS’ Bronx Zoo
