Degree related research
Carola began her research on nonhuman primates with an MSc (Diploma) thesis on female Barbary macaques housed semi-free at a forest enclosure at the Affenberg Salem, Germany (completed 1982); title: “Social behavior and social relationships of adult Barbary macaque females (Macaca sylvanus Linné, 1758)”. During this time (1981-84), she assisted the park management in the annual capture, vaccination, and release campaign of several hundred macaques in the enclosure. The work also included teaching of staff members and guiding and supervision of tourist and student groups.
For her PhD (completed 1989) she worked on the Hanuman langur population of Jodhpur, India; title: “Competition amongst free-ranging Hanuman langur females”. As part of a long-term study initiated by S.M. Mohnot (Jodhpur) and late Christian Vogel (Goettingen) she collaborated with Volker Sommer and Arun Srivastava on various aspects of Hanuman langur socio-ecology particularly female social relationships including dominance, grooming, female reproductive success, and grandmaternal behavior [see publications].
Andreas began research on nonhuman primates with his MSc (Diploma) thesis on captive common marmosets at the colony of the Institute of Anthropology, Georg-August University, Goettingen (completed 1988); title: “Behavior of breeding males of common marmosets Callithrix jacchus (ERXLEBEN, 1777) raising own and genetically unrelated infants”.
Following the MSc (Diploma) he managed the colony of ca. 100-150 marmosets and tamarins, and conducted research on the mating system and cooperation (including communal care) of common marmosets as well as on the colony’s breeding performance and environmental enrichment [see publications]. His PhD (completed 1992) deals with vigilance of common marmosets and explores reactions to predator models, individual contribution, and coordination of vigilance; title: “Scanning behavior of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus ERXLEBEN 1777)”.
