PKWS is part of the Western Isaan Forest Complex (598,400 ha). It harbors a diverse plant and animal community. Present are e.g., Asian elephants, Asiatic black bears, Malayan sun bears, Asian forest bisons (gaurs), and four deer species. With eight out of the nine felids found in Thailand (e.g., tigers, leopards, clouded leopards, golden cats, etc. [learn more]), two canids (jackals and dholes), ten viverrids, five larger raptor species, and two python species the predator community is plentiful. The sanctuary harbors two leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus germaini, T. phayrei) and four macaque species (Macaca arctoides, M. assamensis, M. mulatta, M. leonina) as well as white-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar) and slow loris (Nycticebus bengalensis).

The study site is located at Huai Mai Sot Yai (16°27'N, 101°38'E) at an elevation of 600-800 m, and consists of dry evergreen forest with patches of dry dipterocarp forest, hill evergreen forest, and bamboo stands. The primate community at Huai Mai Sot consists of T. phayrei and H. lar (most common), three macaque species (M. assamensis, M. mulatta, M. leonina) as well as slow loris (N. bengalensis). M. arctoides has been encountered only very rarely and T. germaini is absent in this part of the sanctuary. The site is accessed through an extensive trail system (more than 100 km). Trails are based on existing elephant and gaur trails.

Our field station is located 11 km southwest of the field site in the headquarters of the sanctuary at Thung Kha Mang. With support from NSF we built our own facilities consisting of two residential buildings (8 rooms), kitchen/ lab-storage, and office. The lab is equipped with a drying oven and other items for botanical work. The office is equipped with notebooks and printer as well as scientific books and reprints concerning primatology, ecology, botany, and methods.

The project maintains a generator (electricity for 4 hours each day), several motorbikes (to go to the field site), and a pick-up truck (to get supplies from the next market at Chum Phae, ca. 90 km).
