Carola & Andreas Primate Behavioral Ecology

PKWS (Thailand)

In October 2000 we established a new study site at the Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary (PKWS), northeastern Thailand (16°5'-35'N, 101°20'-55'E). The sanctuary is located 90 km northwest of the provincial capital Chaiyaphum and comprises an area of 157,300 ha at an elevation of 300-1,300 meter above sea level [description of the study site & working conditions].

The long-term aim of the project is to test socio-ecological models regarding costs and benefits of group life, ecology of social relationships, and reproductive strategies.

The current aims revolve around Phayre's leaf monkeys, Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus investigating feeding ecology, feeding competition, and female & male social relationships and reproductive strategies [funded by NSF].

Beyond behavioral observations at the group and individual level, the data collection entails weather data, botany and phenology, nutritional analysis, mechanical properties of food, genetics, and hormones.
