Carola & Andreas Primate Behavioral Ecology

Grateful thanks to all our sponsors supporting our and our students’ research and training!

The National Science Foundation (NSF) through the Physical Anthropology Program, Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences, supports our work since 2002. The current project is entitled “Social relationships and reproductive strategies of Phayre's leaf monkeys” [BCS-0542035; previous award BCS-0215542]. The work with Phayre’s leaf monkeys is further supported through Doctoral

Beginning in 2001 (until 2003) we attempted to habituate and study Rhesus macaques at PKWS. This effort was supported by the Leakey Foundation and National Geographic CRE. Unfortunately the attempt failed; though we learned a lot about the primates on site and the forest.

Thailand - Workshop

Primate Conservation Inc. and Conservation International (through the Primate Action Funds Program) are supporting Wendy Erb’s dissertation work on the highly endangered Simakobu, endemic to the Mentawai Islands; a study conducted in collaboration with the Siberut Conservation Project (German Primate Center, Goettingen).

Dissertation Improvement Grants on stress and reproduction (to Amy Lu) [BCS-0452635] and on juvenile skill-learning and growth (to Kerry Ossi) [BCS-0647837]. Beyond Thailand and Phayre’s leaf monkeys, NSF-DDI grants were awarded to Abigail Derby’s dissertation on red howler monkeys [BCS-0524996], Brandon Wheeler’s dissertation on brown capuchins [BCS-0550971; with Charles Janson], and most recently Alice Elder’s dissertation on gibbons, siamangs, and leaf monkeys [BCS-0726089] and Wendy Erb’s work on simakobus on Siberut [BCS-0752504].
