Previous Seed Grant Winners

Where are they now?

In 2000, E. Troy Rasbury of the Department of Geosciences received a grant for his proposal, "Use of NSLS X-Ray Microprobe and FTIR Beam Lines to Evaluate the Distribution of Trace Elements and Organic Materials in Caliche Paleosols."

The seed grant was used to support Kasey McCall, a graduate student who did her thesis work at the National Synchrotron Light Source. The data that was generated during this study formed the basis for her masters thesis (McCall, 2003), was chosen as one of the science highlights for the Annual Report of the NSLS, and is a major part of a manuscript that was submitted to Geology. In addition, Professor Rasbury has submitted two proposals to DOE for the synchrotron work on U in carbonates coupled with U-Pb dating of the same carbonates. However, both proposals were declined. Dr. Rasbury is still using the NSLS in the capacity of the users program and has become involved as part of a PRT developing the potential for examining U at the M edges at beamline X15B.
