Faculty Accomplishments

1) Iwao Ojima

was inducted to the ACS Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame and he received a plaque for certification at the special reception during the ACS National Meeting in Boston. In addition, the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry (ACS) published the list of inductees, 1966-2007, in its August 23, 2007 issue and the list is shown permanently (to be updated every year) in the journal website .

2) Clare Grey

has been awarded a NYSTAR Faculty Development Award. The award is based on her proposal "to improve fundamental understanding of chemical reactions and develop a new class of battery materials." The award is for $750,000 over three years. The press release can be found on the NYSTAR web site.

won the Research Award of the Electrochemical Society, Battery Division (2007) to be presented in the Electrochemical Society October Fall Meeting in D.C.

3) Benjamin Chu

has been awarded the Gutenberg-Lecture-Award 2007 by the Graduate School of Excellence at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz for his "extraordinary contributions in the field of polymer science." In addition, Prof. Chu has also recently (June, 2006) received a Distinguished Honorary Professorship appointment from Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry (CIOAC) in China.

4) Carlos Simmerling

has been named as a winner of the Itanium Solutions Alliance Innovation Contest in the category of Humanitarian Impact Innovation. The contest is sponsored by the Itanium Solutions Alliance which is a computing industry organization (includes Intel, HP, Fujitsu, Hitachi, NEC, SGI, Microsoft, Redhat, Oracle) and is meant to recognize the most important applications of Itanium® 2 processor-based computer systems in three categories, Humanitarian Impact Innovation, Enterprise Business Application and Entrepreneurial Innovation. Prof. Simmerling was awarded the top honor in the Humanitarian Impact Innovation category for his use of "high-end computing to enable advanced HIV and AIDS research." Full press release:

5) Nicole Sampson

has been awarded a Faculty Development Grant from the New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research (NYSTAR). The NYSTAR grant was awarded to support the development of molecular-based treatments and diagnostics for cancer, tuberculosis and fertility that have potential for commercialization within New York State. Prof. Sampson is one of only two Stony Brook faculty to be awarded a NYSTAR Faculty Development Grant this year (2006) and shares this honor with Iwao Ojima who was awarded a NYSTAR grant in 2002.

6) Joanna Fowler

has received the 2006 New York State Senate Woman of Distinction Award. The award was presented to her in Albany by Senator Caesar Trunzo (3rd Senate District, Brentwood) for her "selfless dedication to science, education and health [which] are an inspiration for the entire community," said Senator Trunzo. Professor Fowler's most recent research centers on using neuroimaging to study the mechanisms of drug addiction.

7) Trevor Sears

has been elected a Fellow of the American Optical Society

8) Elizabeth Boon

has won the American Chemical Society/Dreyfus Foundation ACS PROGRESS/Dreyfus Lectureship Award (so called the "Rising Star" award) in 2008.

has won the NYSTAR James D. Watson Young Investigator Award.
