The
role of the Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook is to contribute significantly
to basic and applied knowledge in chemistry while offering excellent educational
programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. In particular, we want
to be able to respond to the needs of society, to anticipate future changes
in chemical research, and to educate students capable of adapting to new
perspectives. Thus, the emphasis is on the principles of theory and practice,
on creative thinking, and on frontiers of chemistry.
The first Ph.D. was granted by the department to Dr. Raymond Mackay on June
6, 1966. Since then we have proudly launched more than 500 Ph.D. and 250
master's degree graduates into successful careers in industrial research
and management, teaching, and basic research in academic and government
laboratories. Our academic community has steadily grown to its current population
of 120 graduate students, 42 faculty, and 35 postdoctoral associates.
