Q-What should a student do if the funding changes from State to Research?
A-The student employee MUST come to the Student Health Insurance Office and complete a new POMCO (RF) Health Insurance Enrollment Form, within 30 days of his or her new appointment, if they want to continue health insurance under the new title.
Q-What should a International Student do about Health Insurance?
A-The State of New York requires all non-immigrant students (F-1, F-2, J-1 and J-2) to be enrolled in and billed for the mandatory health insurance plan for international students. The university will charge the student $458.50 for this International Student Health Insurance Plan for the spring 2007 semester (January 15 - August 15). The student's account will be adjusted by March if they have enrolled in the TA/GA or RA health insurance and they will only have to pay $36.75 for MEDICAL EVACUATION AND REPATRIATION.
International students (F-1 and J-1) who are under the sponsorship of SUNY Stony Brook are required to have health insurance coverage at all times during an academic year, while their visas are active. The mandatory health insurance coverage runs from the 15th to the 15th of each month. If the student employee is not in an active payroll status by March 15, 2007 he or she MUST stay on the International Health Insurance Plan for the entire semester.
Q-What if a student has added his or her spouse onto his or her TA/GA or RA plan and the spouse is also a student at Stony Brook?
A-If the spouse is a registered student at Stony Brook, he or she will be automatically billed $458.50 and enrolled in the mandatory International Health Insurance Plan. The spouse must submit a paper waiver to Leta Edelson by the end of the second week of classes if he or she would like that fee of $458.50 adjusted from their student accounts bill. If he or she has any questions about the waiver deadline please have them contact Leta Edelson at 632-6054.
Q-What if a student gets a COBRA letter?
A-If the student employee receives a COBRA letter the health insurance has already been terminated, even if paperwork was done to extend/reappoint the student. If paperwork to appoint, reappoint, or extend a student employee is done late, the system will automatically term the health insurance. Please make sure that paperwork is done in a timely manner so the student does not experience a lapse in health insurance coverage.
*If the student employee gets a COBRA letter, this means he or she does not have health insurance coverage, and they MUST submit a new health insurance enrollment application if the desire is for health insurance coverage to begin again.
Q-What happens to a students health insurance if the paper work to appoint them is late (Late Paperwork)?
A-The student employee’s health insurance enrollment will be delayed if the payroll paperwork is not processed in a timely manner. If the department is having difficulties appointing the student employee please inform the student that the Graduate Student Employee Health Insurance will be delayed. The health insurance form cannot be processed until the student is in an active payroll status receiving payroll checks biweekly. If the student is not on the payroll by March 15th, receiving a biweekly check, the student will need to stay on the International Health Insurance Plan for the semester and the $458.50 will not be removed.
Q-Who should a student call if they have questions about the required Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) fee or how to complete the waiver on their Solar?
A-The student should call Jennifer Vorraro 632-6331 or Leta Edelson at 632-6054.
