New Chemical Security Rule
In 2006, Congress instructed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to set rules on chemical security, to prevent the intentional misuse of chemicals. On November 20, 2007 the new rules were finalized giving all facilities, including universities, with any of 324 listed Chemicals of Interest (COI) 60 days to report. Stony Brook University must report to DHS if we possess these chemicals in a quantity greater than the Screening Threshold Quantity (STQ) listed in Appendix A of the regulation. More »
Tip of the Month: Cicada Killers
Cicada killers are large docile wasps that emerge in the summer to hunt for cicadas. The cicada killers look very dangerous, but are really gentle giants. The males buzz around to defend their territory from other males and can be seen charging windows when they see their reflection and think it’s another male. The males have no stinger and can not sting or bite. Although they may appear aggressive and appear to chase you, they are just investigating every new visitor to their territory. More »
