State University of New York Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (SUNY AGEP)
Stony Brook University is the project headquarters and lead institution for SUNY AGEP. The Alliance includes the University at Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo as well as Brookhaven Science Associates at Brookhaven National Labs and SUNY LSAMP ( see description below). The AGEP program seeks to provide qualified underrepresented students who are interested in graduate study and academic careers in science, technology, mathematics (STEM) disciplines with access to a network of services that enrich their academic experience and promote their program success. AGEP is dedicated to creating an effective network of faculty, students and administrators who embrace academic excellence and social diversity in the science and technology fields.
AGEP Mission Statement
In collaboration with students, departments, faculty, staff and administration, the State University of New York Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (SUNY AGEP) Program has a two-part mission:
- To offer exemplary and comprehensive services and systems so as to broaden access and enhance the success of groups (African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Hispanic Americans and Native Pacific Islanders) that have been historically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) doctoral programs and academic careers.
- To engage in scholarship on diversity in graduate STEM education and to have that scholarship help to shape structures and strategies for enhancing the participation of underrepresented minority students in graduate education and academic careers.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Must have been accepted for admission into one of the four SUNY centers
- Must either be enrolled in a doctoral programs in a STEM discipline or be an undergraduate who is interested in enrolling in a doctoral program.
- Must participate in AGEP program activities
- Mentoring program
- Summer research opportunities for eligible undergraduates
- Summer head-start for new admits
- Travel to professional conferences
- Financial incentives
- Establishment of a Minority Resource Center in the Center for Inclusive Education
