Thomas Kerth received a B.A. (1970) and M.A. (1971) from Indiana University, and was granted a Ph.D. in German from Yale University in 1977. He also spent two years studying medieval German literature at the Free University of Berlin. He served as chairman and director of undergraduate studies in Stony Brook's Department of German and Slavic Languages, and as director of undergraduate studies in the Department of European Languages.
