Deadlines for Applicants!

Did you ever stop to think how many people are going to play a part in your application to the health professional schools you want to attend?

There are:

  • the people at the registrar who mail your Stony Brook transcript out
  • people at other colleges who will mail your transcript out (if you took courses at one or more colleges besides Stony Brook)
  • The professors, health professionals, research supervisors or employers you will ask for letters of recommendattion.
  • Workers at services such as the AAMC or AADSAS who will process your aplication.
  • Admissions Committees at individual schools who will process and review your application
  • The people who (hopefuly) will interview you!

Even though perhaps dozens of people will be involved in your application, only one person is responsible for holding everything together. That person is you.

The first thing you have to know is where you are choosing to go. Do you want medicine or dentistry? Will you apply to D.O. schools?

Second you have to know deadlines. Deadlines differ from school to school (or program to program) and can affect the entire course of your application. For example, typically the AMCAS filing deadline for Columbia's medical school is October 15th, for New York Medical College it is normally December 15th.

You would have much less time if applying to many schools like Columbia. Therefore, you would have to start asking for letters of recommendation earlier and start applying earlier.

Don't let time slip by! If you have an October 15 application deadline, and you have not had your Committee Letter interview until mid September, something is wrong!

Make sure to start working on your applications early so that you won't have to rush at the last minute.
