To Teresa

I could not be there at the memorial service for Teresa this evening, but I wanted to let her family and friends know how special she was to me. As I fumble with words, I realize that it does not take fancy speech to express feelings from the heart. As the secretary in the Spanish department where Teresa worked, I have many teachers and students at my door each day, many times with questions or problems. Teresa was one of those people, but when she came to my door, I knew that in whatever way I would help her, she would re-pay me in her kind words, stories, or beautiful smile. Teresa loved her family. She always spoke of her children, her husband and her family in Peru. Discussing work was secondary, because in the big picture, family and love were primary. Teresa valued children. Every day she asked about my daughter, who Teresa would greet with a kiss and a warm embrace, asking her about school. Teresa cared. My time with her was brief, but her impact on me was great. In the busy course of my day, Teresa's presence slowed me down, in a good way. We can't race through our lives and let what is important slip away. Her love of family and friends was contagious. When you touch one heart, you touch many. To Monika, with the beautiful face of your mother, Derek, and the rest of Teresa's family who I did not have the privilege to meet, please know that the Spanish department feels your loss. She was our friend first, and a professional next. We send our deepest sympathy. Also please know that, for me, Teresa was extra special. I will miss her in the hallways and in my doorway, but I will see her each day in my prayers and spirit.

Rest in peace, dear Teresa, and God bless.

With love and gratitude, Sarah Battaglia
