Book (in progress): Imaginary Policies and Real Fictions: Post-War Cross-cultural Relations in the Americas in Film
A study of the image of the hemispheric "others" in the Americas and their relationship to international policy changes since WWII and up to the present. Based on close readings of fictional narratives (novels, films, comics, songs) and organized around four topics: Pan-Americanism, Progress, Migration, and Multiculturalism.
Dissertation: Imagining the Present of the Americas: Three Readings of The Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love.
A three-tiered reading of Puig's and Hijuelos' works as narrative theories of popular culture, postmodern novels, and cultural artifacts of exchange between Latin and Anglo America. Modeling through their characters their desired or censored forms of reception of films, records, and novels, these novels invite their audiences to either transgress or perpetuate the politics of difference in the Americas.
