We
are now accepting applications four our five-year, combined BA/MAT and BA/MA programs. These programs
allow qualified students to earn both a bachelor's and a master's degree in five years.
We will not be keeping regular office hours over the summer. If
you are interested in enrolling in the social studies
education program, please email Dr. Frohman for an appointment or come by and speak with him before the semester begins!

The Program
The
Social Studies Teacher Education Program has several different certification programs:
Undergraduate 4-Year Program
(for current undergraduates and incoming transfer students)
Combined, five-year BA/MAT Program
(for current undergraduates with a 3.2 GPA or higher)
Combined, five-year BA/MA Program
(for current undergraduates with a 3.5 GPA or higher)
There are several advantages to enrolling in one of the five-year programs:
- They provide a more coherent learning experience.
- Graduates are more competitive on the job market.
- Students who complete this program can focus on learning how to teach, rather than having to worry about going back to school to complete the master's degree required by New York state.
- The BA/MA program will give students a a stronger knowledge of the content area than that provided by any other teacher education program in the New York region. The MA degree can also serve as a spring board for doctoral study or various kinds of non-academic employment. For details on the BA/MA program, click here to download the advising worksheet.
Students interested in the BA/MA program should consult with the program director no later than the beginning of the fall semester of the junior year. Click here for an application form.
Master of Arts in Teaching Social Studies
(for persons who hold an undergraduate degree in history or one of the social sciences; persons who do not meet the requirements for admission to the MAT, click here for further information)
Program Description
Mastery of history
and the social sciences is the foundation for teaching social studies.
Undergraduates must complete a major in history or one of the social
sciences. Applicants to the MAT program are expected to have completed
an undergraduate degree in history or the social sciences (or an
equivalent course of study), and students in the MAT program must
complete at least 15 additional graduate credits of history. Students
in both the undergraduate and graduate programs are also required
to complete courses in eleven areas of study to insure that they
have the knowledge needed to engage their own students in meaningful
study of the modern world.
In addition
to these content requirements, undergraduate and graduate students
also follow a prescribed course of study in education. This includes
a set of three core education courses and a two-semester sequence
of social studies methods seminars (and 100 hours of state-mandated
field experience). All students must also pass a qualifying interview to advance to student teaching.
The culmination
of the program is the student teaching internship. Student teaching
is a full-time, one-semester internship that is divided between
the middle (7-9) and high school (10-12) levels. In student teaching,
students work closely with cooperating teachers who act as mentors
and take a seminar which provides the opportunity to apply their
knowledge of content and pedagogy to analyze the problems of professional
practice.
The Social Studies
Teacher Education Program is accredited by the National Council
for the Social Studies (NCSS), and the Stony Brook Professional
Education Program is accredited by NCATE,
