Connecticut
and Parts Adjacent, 1780
Bernard Romans was a British
surveyor who eventually took the American side in the Revolution. Prior to
the Revolution, he was active in surveying the Florida area, and also
produced an unusual manuscript map of "The Colony of New York and its
Surroundings." Later he planned fortifications on the Hudson River,
and made maps of the region around the Hudson Highlands.
Romans' map of Connecticut
and parts of New York was originally published in Hartford in 1777. The
Dutch edition, published in 1780, contains a small number of revisions.
Romans’ map resembles those of Holland, Montresor, and Jefferys, but its
depiction of Long Island contains some improvements, which probably
reflect his own knowledge of the area.
