Foreign Sheet Maps

This small map of Haiti produced by the Central Intelligence Agency
is typical of many of the maps that you can find among the foreign sheet maps.

Foreign sheet maps are filed in the map cases before the "foreign maps in series," which are mostly topographic maps (see the map of the map collection ). Foreign sheet maps include maps of whole countries, road maps, and maps of individual cities.

Foreign sheet maps are arranged according to their Library of Congress Classification number. Some of these maps are cataloged and can be located through the STARS computers. Uncataloged foreign sheet maps have the first part of the call number (or "stem") written on them. A summary of the Library of Congress classification schedule for foreign maps is posted on top of the first maps case in the foreign sheet map section.
