The Government Information Section is located in the Frank Melville
Jr. Memorial Library. Help in using Government information is available
at the reference desk in the Central Reading Room, and by appointment.
Most of the collection is located on the second floor of the library
directly above the reference room. Access is by a stairway at the
back of the reference room, and from the Science and Engineering Library.
The Government Information Section serves the university community
and the general public. It is a Selective Depository Library for Federal
government information, and a designated Research Center for the the
New York State Depository Library System.
The Collection also includes local government information for Suffolk
County, including its budget proceedings and the County Code. International
documents can also be found here, especially United Nations publications.
A small law library, which focuses on New York State and Federal law,
is associated with the documents collection.
Some Documents are cataloged in STARS,
but most have to be accessed using a variety of online and paper indexes.
Check the Government Internet
Resources page for websites related to the subject.
A more detailed description of the collection follows:
We are one of about 1300 libraries designated as part of the Federal
Depository Library Program by the Government Printing Office. The
Stony Brook Library began participating in this program in 1963. Currently
we select about 60% of of all available government documents. Depository
materials are available in paper, microfiche, CD-ROM, and online.
We also obtain from the Depository Program a large number of maps
and a variety of legal materials.
The Library serves the First Congressional District as well as the
University community. We have a special Computer Work Station next
to the Reference Desk, which is reserved for access to materials from
the Federal Depository Library Program. For further information about
the Federal Depository Program, please refer to Keeping
America Informed.
Many Federal documents are not cataloged and they can't be found on
STARS.
For uncataloged documents please consult special indexes on paper,
or check online resources such as Government
Documents Catalog Service (Autographics: Index to government publications),
Catalog
of the U.S. Government Publications (earlier years in paper as
Index to Government Publications - Monthly Catalog). Online resources
can be found using our list of Internet links, Government Information:
Online Resources.
A useful guide for locating older Federal documents entitled New Government
Documents Locator is at the Reference Desk (call number: Ref/Desk
Z 232.U6B3), as well as online.
Our primary collection in this category consists of United Nations
documents. Most of these are available in two microform collections:
Readex Microprint (Microprint 13) set (1945-1980), and on microfiche
from 1981 to present (Microfiche 487).
There are detailed indexes for United Nations publications in paper
and on CD-ROM. Many important United Nations publications, such as
the UN Demographic Yearbook, are cataloged on STARS.
An online index known as the PAIS Index (link) provides selective
coverage of United Nations and other international publications.
We also have on paper many documents from international organizations,
such as the European Union, the International Labour Organisation
(ILO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organisation for
Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nation's
Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the World
Health Organisation (WHO). These documents are cataloged and housed
in the book stacks. There are also a large number of materials available
online.
The New York State Collection is strong and extensive. We are designated
as a Research Center for the New York State Documents Depository System.
The Collection includes materials from 1973-1979 on microfilm, and
from 1980-1995 on microfiche. Currently the microfiche collection
has stopped because the New York State Library now scans all depository
documents and puts them online. The State Library also publishes an
index entitled “Checklist of Official Publication of the State
of New York” that is published monthly and lists depository
as well as non depository items. The online version is available here.
By law, all agencies send a minimum number of their publication copies
in paper, microfiche and/or CD-ROM to the State Library, which disseminates
them to the depository libraries.
For further information please click New
York State Document Depository Program.
The Law Collection is strong in the areas of the Supreme Court, Federal
Court and New York State Courts. We collect only the decisions and
indexes for the Supreme, Federal and New York State court cases. We
also select ALR series 1-5, which includes some selected cases from
other states. We have various legal indexes and encyclopedias.
The Government Information Collection acquires major sets of legal
resources on paper, microfiche and CD-ROM. Online legal and congressional
resources are available through the Academic
Universe and Congressional
Universe databases of Lexis-Nexis. The major paper and microfiche
sets include:
-United States Serial Set Volumes (microfiche & paper)
-United States Statutes and Codes (microfiche & paper)
-New York State Statutes and Codes
-Digests of Supreme Court, Federal Courts and New York State Courts
-American Law Review Series 1-5
Some legal materials are cataloged for the Main Library Stacks and
may be found by using STARS.
Links to additional legal materials are available on Legal Resources. Long
Island-Suffolk County
The print collection of local documents is mostly limited to Suffolk
County. The Library collects some local annual reports and some environmental
reports on paper. You can find them using STARS;
the online Catalog. Currently many major collections of New York State
counties are available online. Official local government websites
can be accessed by clicking Suffolk
and Nassau.
