STONY BROOK HISTORY: A BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CHECKLIST
bar
This archival research guide identifies selected titles that document the institutional history and development of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Sources documenting the history and development of State University of New York are described in State University of New York History: Printed Archives Research Guide.

In addition to published reports and official documents, the University's Printed Archives includes academic guides, announcements, bulletins, class schedules, commencement programs, directories, dormitory guides, newsletters, newspapers, telephone books, yearbooks, and other formal and informal publications by the University and its students, staff, faculty, and administration. These form a part of a continually growing, albeit incomplete, collection that documents the history of the University at Stony Brook. The Archives excludes journal articles, course syllabi, and other faculty and staff publications published off-campus.

The Stars electronic catalog represents only a small fraction of printed archival holdings. Please consult staff and the Archives card catalogs in the Special Collections Department for additional holdings. Call numbers in this list that start with the letter C or D, followed by a hyphen, represent items cataloged in the University Archives only--these titles, and many others, are not represented in Stars.

SBNEWS
, the university's electronic information system, provides current academic, administrative, and institutional information. To insure availability of materials and to confirm access to the reading room, please contact the University Archives, which is located in the Special Collections Department.

State University of New York at Stony Brook
State University of New York at Stony Brook was established by the State University of New York Board of Trustees in 1956 as the State University College on Long Island and opened its doors in temporary quarters at the William Robertson Coe [1869-1955] Planting Fields Estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island, in 1957. Ground for this state-operated campus was broken at the Stony Brook site in 1960, and the first buildings were occupied in 1962. The move to the new campus was completed in 1963. The advisory body for State University of New York at Stony Brook is the Stony Brook Council. The President is the chief executive officer of the University.

Self Study Reports and Middle States Evaluations
  • Institutional accreditation requires the University to prepare a self-study report every ten years. This is the summary of numerous reports on all facets of the University. The report of this visiting team is then reviewed and formally issued by the Association's Commission on Higher Education. The self-study and Middle-States Association reports are listed separately below in chronological order.
