Introduction
The AIM USA organizations' donation of material to the AIDC 100 archive
was received in October 2000. The material is a small selection of
news
and information related to the field of Automatic Identification and
in particular the barcode. With AIM's purpose of educating the global
market about information management systems, the collection follows
the progression of the industry from the 1980s onward.
The records are open for research without restriction.
History
AIM USA was founded in 1972, comprising of four companies as
an arm of the Materials Handling Institute. In 1986, it became a separate
entity with 85 member companies, and it's membership has risen ever
since to roughly 171 members.
AIM USA is an association of companies that provide leadership and
focus on the Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) industry.
The companies themselves produce a range of AIDC systems and equipment
such as bar codes, magnetic stripe, radio frequency, optical character
recognition, and voice recognition technology. The organization also
provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information relating
to Automated Data Capture, promotes the industry through educational
programs and conferences, and develops technical standards for the industry.
AIM USA holds the annual trade-show SCAN-TECH, at which the latest
news and advances in the field of AIDC can be seen.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of four series: Industry Meetings and Conferences,
Industry Newsletters, Industry Manuals, and Books.
The main focus of the collection is the newsletters and the manuals,
and also includes information on the meetings and conferences. The books
in the collection were published in the late 1980's and early 1990's.
Although possibly out-of-date now, they provide a view of development
of the industry.
