Former NYPD Commanding Officer Appointed Chief of Stony Brook University Police Department
Robert J. Lenahan has been appointed Chief of Police at Stony Brook University, announced President Shirley Strum Kenny. Lenahan, a 26-year veteran of the New York City Police Department, most recently served as Director of Campus Emergency Management for Stony Brook University. He brings his extensive experience as a troubleshooter in law enforcement, security, and crisis management to further fortify and oversee the Stony Brook University Main Campus, Research & Development Park, Manhattan Campus and Southampton Campus.

“Changing Climates, Changing Minds: Storms, Trust and Public Perception” on Tap for Upcoming Conference at Stony Brook University
Three Stony Brook departments are presenting a conference titled “Changing Climates, Changing Minds: Storms, Trust and Public Perception” on November 12-14, 2008. This interdisciplinary event is predicated upon the belief that changing societal attitudes and practices is key to responding to the urgent issue of climate change, and to other challenges that lie at the interface of science and society.

New Director, New Directions for New York Sea Grant
New York Sea Grant (NYSG) welcomed the arrival of Dr. James W. Ammerman as its new director on October 15, 2008. Dr. Ammerman, an aquatic microbial ecologist and biogeochemist, will now lead the New York Sea Grant program which has brought millions of federal research dollars to Stony Brook University to address such vital environmental issues as brown tide, accurate storm and flooding prediction, and the dwindling of Long Island’s lobster and hard clam resources.

Stony Brook Receives Two Awards And Is Recognized By Student Affairs Leadership Council For Fostering A Safer Campus
Stony Brook University is a leader among American universities working to make campuses safer according to the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the Student Affairs Leadership Council. The two preeminent national organizations recognized Stony Brook’s Behavior Assessment Committee process as an initiative for other universities to emulate when identifying and assisting students who may exhibit safety concerns on campus.
