Samuel C. Silverstein is the John C. Dalton Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics, and Professor of Medicine at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Silverstein's research spans the disciplines of cell biology, cellular immunology, experimental pathology and infectious diseases. His interests in the role of endocytosis in penetration of animal viruses into animal cells and in the mechanisms by which cells of the immune system defend the host against viral infections led to his life_long studies of the structure and functions of phagocytic leukocytes and of mononuclear phagocytes in particular.

Dr. Silverstein is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
