Power Outage, Emergency Construction Notice: Wednesday, May 27, 2009, 12:00 noon
On Friday, May 22, 2009, the Stony Brook campus experienced an electrical power outage which affected many areas of the campus. The University worked quickly to restore power to all areas of the campus. Presently, the Center for Molecular Medicine building and south campus are still being affected by this interruption of service. A temporary solution to the problem has been the installation of portable generators to the Center for Molecular Medicine and buildings within the South campus.

In order to provide permanent electrical power to affected areas of the South campus, the University will begin an emergency construction project on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 7:00 a.m. This project will require the roadway closing of Circle Road from Engineering Drive to Tabler Drive. To access Tabler Quad, motorists must travel west on Circle Road from the traffic circle located at Marburger Drive and Circle Road. To access Roosevelt Quad, Kelly Quad, and Engineering Drive, motorists must travel south on Circle Road from Gym Road or may also utilize Toll Drive and Campus Drive. View the highlighted map here.

It is anticipated that this roadway closing will be in effect until June 5, 2009. Throughout this project, individuals are encouraged to access the West Campus by utilizing the Main and North entrances on Nicolls Road. Portable variable message signs will be in place to assist motorists in reaching their destination.

During this construction phase, motorists should be prepared for possible delays traveling on the West campus. The University would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your patience during this process.

H1N1 Influenza (Flu) Update: Tuesday, May 5, 2009, 2:00 pm
The University continues to monitor information and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the New York State Department of Health and the Suffolk County Health Departments about H1N1 Influenza (Flu) in our region.

All students, faculty and staff are urged to monitor reports of influenza in our region and other areas that they are traveling to, remain aware of advisories, and take everyday actions to stay healthy.

  • Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Swine Flu Update: Friday, May 1, 2009, 1:00 pm
To the Student Community:
While there are not any known (probable or confirmed) cases of Swine Flu on campus, Student Health Services will be open this weekend for students who may develop influenza-like-illness (ILI) - fever with either cough or sore throat) and wish to seek medical care. However, students who have ILI symptoms are urged to minimize contact and exposures to others by following the guidance provided in previous advisories posted here and from the additional links provided below.

Student Health Service Weekend Hours (9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon)
Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3.

In addition, Campus Residences has been distributing containers of hand sanitizer gel. Students are reminded to prevent the spread of flu by washing your hands often, avoiding people who are ill and using tissues when you cough or sneeze. Stopping the Flu is Up to You!

Swine Flu Update: Wednesday, April 29, 2009, 12:00 noon
Due to recent confirmed cases of Swine Flu in the New York metropolitan area, the following additional guidance from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is being provided for all students, faculty and staff who may develop influenza-like illness (fever with either cough or sore throat).

If at Home or in your Campus Residence:

  • If you develop influenza-like-illness (ILI) (fever with either cough or sore throat) you are strongly encouraged to self-isolate in their home or residence hall for 7 days after the onset of illness or at least 24 hours after symptoms have resolved, whichever is longer. Persons who experience ILI and wish to seek medical care should contact their health care providers to report illness (by telephone or other remote means) before seeking care at a clinic, physician's office, or hospital. If you are a student and have these symptoms, you should contact the Student Health Service during operating hours to speak with a medical professional.

  • If you have difficulty breathing or shortness of breath or feel you are severely ill, you should seek immediate medical attention.

  • If ill persons must go into the community (e.g., to seek medical care) they should wear a face mask to reduce the risk of spreading the virus in the community when they cough, sneeze, talk or breathe. If a face mask is unavailable, ill persons needing to go into the community should use a handkerchief or tissues to cover any coughing.

  • Individuals in home isolation and their household members should be given infection control instructions including frequent hand washing with soap and water. Use alcohol-based hand gels (containing at least 60% alcohol) when soap and water are not available and hands are not visibly dirty. When the ill person is within 6 feet of others at home, the ill person should wear a face mask if one is available and the ill person is able to tolerate wearing it.

Contact With Others in the Household/Campus Residence:

Household contacts who are well should:

  1. Remain home at the earliest sign of illness.

  2. Minimize contact in the community to the extent possible.

  3. Designate a single household family member as the ill person's caregiver to minimize interactions with asymptomatic persons. Resident students should contact a residence hall staff member if they are unable to identify a caregiver.

If you reside on campus, feel free to contact your Resident Assistant or Resident Hall Director for additional information and referral.

Swine Flu Health Advisory: Monday, April 27, 2009, 2:00 pm
In response to the national public health emergency declared for the confirmed cases of swine flu (influenza A H1N1), students, faculty and staff are urged to monitor this developing situation closely and take precautions to prevent the spread of influenza. Additional advisories will be posted on this site.

Stopping the Flu is Up to You!
The flu is spread from person-to-person when someone who has the flu sneezes, coughs or even talks. The flu virus is put into the air and may be inhaled by anyone close by. Occasionally a person may become infected by touching something with the virus on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

To protect yourself and your family from the flu:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water. Alcohol-based hand cleansers are also effective.
  • Avoid people who are ill!
  • Stay home from work or school if you are sick. Resident students should stay in bed. If your symptoms worsen, seek medical attention from your healthcare provider.
  • Use tissues when you cough, sneeze or spit, and dispose of the tissues in a trash bin.
  • Keep hands away from your face. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Clean shared space more often such as phone receivers, keyboards, steering wheels and office equipment.
  • Do not share personal items such as forks, spoons, toothbrushes and towels.

What are the symptoms of the flu?
The flu usually starts suddenly and may include these symptoms:

  • fever (usually high)
  • headache
  • extreme tiredness
  • dry cough
  • sore throat
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • muscle aches
  • stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, may occur in children but are rare in adults

The NYS Department of Health is working closely with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1), and has implemented emergency plans. The University is continuing to monitor the situation. Additional information about the swine flu and influenza may be found on the following websites:

Residence Hall Closures: 7:19 pm Sunday, February 8, 2009

Despite repeated repairs to the High Temperature Hot Water Line which services Roosevelt and Kelly Quads, the pipe has once again experienced a leak, causing a lack of heat and hot water to all of Roosevelt and three buildings in Kelly (Baruch, Eisenhower and Dewey). Although crews are working diligently, it is very possible that heat may not return in these buildings until sometime Monday. With anticipated exterior temperatures expected to be in the 20's tonight, the interior temperatures may drop into the 50's or below.

For this reason we are offering alternative housing in other campus residences. We will assign each resident to a temporary space somewhere on campus for the evening. Several hundred people would be assigned to spaces with beds. Several hundred more would be assigned to a lounge, or possibly another student room. In this case you would be required to bring your own pillow and blankets to make yourself comfortable on a carpeted floor overnight.

If you do not wish to be reassigned you MUST make your own arrangements for someplace to stay for the evening.

If you are currently at home for the weekend, we suggest that you do not return to campus until tomorrow. If you are on campus but live locally, we suggest you go home for the night. Finally, if you can stay with a friend this evening, please do so.

We ask that every resident of these affected buildings go to, or call, their college offices between the hours of 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm to tell us whether you have made your own arrangements for the evening, or you need us to assign you a space.

Please accept our most sincere apologies for being inconvenienced in this matter.

If you have questions, please talk with your Hall Director or call 632-9255 or 632-4200.

If there are cancellations, that information will be posted on the Stony Brook University home page as well as this page.

In addition, a follow up e-mail announcing the cancellations will be sent to the campus community. Cancellation information will also be available through 632-SNOW or 444-SNOW. External media sources will also be provided with information pertaining to cancellations.

If there are no cancellations made by 4:30 am tomorrow morning, individuals should periodically visit the Stony Brook home page as updates will be provided throughout the day.

Should final exams scheduled for Friday, December 19th need to be cancelled, those exams will be rescheduled for Saturday, December 20th. They will be held at the same time and location as originally scheduled. For those individuals unable to take final exams on December 20th due to religious observances or other special considerations, they should e-mail their faculty members to make arrangements to take their final exams on Monday.

Students in the Health Sciences Center programs should check their blackboard account and/or contact their department administrators for specific instructions. Students in the School of Medicine should check their SOM email account regarding the rescheduling of the NBME examinations.

Information regarding cancellations of classes on the Stony Brook Manhattan campus on Friday, December 19th will also be made available through the methods described above.

The Emergency Operations Center will monitor forecasts throughout the weekend and information regarding cancellations of events being held will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

All individuals are reminded that they should take special precautions when traveling on roadways and should periodically monitor local weather forecasts and SB Alert emergency notification information.
