Personal Computer Basics

Basic Computer Care for the New User
NCE 200 • 6 Sessions • Fee: $699
This foundation course is specific to Spanish speaking computer users who want to improve their understanding and ability to care for their home systems. Taking care of your equipment and establishing a preventive maintenance routine are critical to ensuring that you have a reliable system that performs at top efficiency year after year. We will explore how to keep your system clean, inside and out. This is a hands-on introduction in the basics of customizing settings; understanding the difference between hardware and software and how these things are working together; how to do computer cleanup and use PC tools for computer maintenance. Learn about viruses, malware, spyware and how to protect your PC from all these threats. We will cover effective troubleshooting and advice on solving basic computer problems. One CD copy of hard drive utility tools will be included with course materials.
This is meant to be a basic introduction and not a comprehensive source for troubleshooting computers.

Introduction to Windows

This foundation course is required for all computer courses. This hands-on introduction is a computer "must" for the small business owner, job seeker or anyone interested in learning about the latest personal computer technology for home or business. Topics covered in this foundational class are an introduction to the Windows icon-based program including the use of the mouse, manipulating Windows, Explorer, file manager and applications. No prior computer knowledge is required. This course is a prerequisite for all computer courses.

From Windows to Web: The Essentials of Personal Computing
NCE 707 • 13 sessions • Fee: $1,499.00
This comprehensive program serves as a broad-based introduction to using a personal computer. Starting from a foundation in Microsoft Windows and exploring the basics of Word, using e-mail, navigating the Internet, learning about web design, and concluding with use of a digital camera, this program covers all you need to know to get you started. Students who successfully complete this 13-session program will earn certificates in both "Introduction to Computers" and "Microsoft Web Design" (certificate will be issued upon request ).
NOTES: This section of NCE 707 is taught in English with a Spanish speaking Instructor who assists the students with a Spanish translation, if necessary.
This section is being offered to assist our Spanish speaking colleagues in obtaining basic computer skills that will enhance both their personal education and their ability to progress in their careers.

How To Buy and Sell on EBay
NCE 800 • 5 sessions • Fee: $389
With over 200 million registered buyers and sellers, it should come as no surprise to know that you can buy, and sell, just about anything on EBay. It is the worlds largest auction site and if you learn how to work it, you can create either your own "garage sale" online or start your own part or full time business selling online.

This comprehensive class will take the student from the introduction to the EBay marketplace all the way to getting paid. You'll learn how to search for products to buy and sell. How to see what's currently "hot" and what's not. How to bid, how to list items for sale, how to take pictures and upload to EBay. How to collect your money and last, how to ship.

This class will be an actual "live" class. We're not just reading books here! Students will be encouraged to actively follow the class material. Over the five nights participating students will complete the following in class:

  • Create an EBay and a PayPal account.
  • Choose an item to sell online.
  • Take digital pictures of your item.
  • Write an effective sales description.
  • Upload your ad and pictures to EBAY.
  • Hopefully, sell your product!
  • Get paid and communicate with your buyer.
  • Pack and ship your product.

Comprehensive program that incorporates three introductory Microsoft Office software application courses with two workshops related to specific university departments.
Courses include: Introduction to Microsoft Windows, Introduction to Microsoft Word, Introduction to Microsoft Excel, exploring the importance of common values, and platforming tips and tools for customer interaction. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the program.

Website Design

Macromedia Dreamweaver 8
NCE 328 • 9 sessions • Fee $479

Dreamweaver is the industry-standard website development software, supporting sophisticated functions such as JavaScript and Dynamic HTML. This course will cover topics such as basic page creation, layout tables, frames v. no frames, how to edit HTML, internal FTP capabilities, templates and how to manage workflow.

In addition, the last 2- 3 sessions will focus on separating the content of a website from the style. We will focus on how to create Cascading Style Sheets and how to apply the style sheets to website(s).
Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or the basic computing skills as described in our self-test.

Macromedia Fireworks 8

Create web graphics, from a simple logo to a sophisticated rollover or pop-up menu, with this user-friendly program from the leader in web design software applications. Fireworks writes the JavaScript required for complex web graphics, and seamlessly merges with Dreamweaver, Macromedia's web layout program. This course is a thorough introduction to this powerful program. Students will create their own graphics to be incorporated into their website designs in Dreamweaver.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or the basic computing skills as described in our self-test.

Exploring Macromedia FLASH 8
NCE 329 • 12 sessions • Fee: $629
Macromedia Flash is the professional standard for producing high-impact Web experiences. The focus is on creating animation for the World Wide Web. This course will guide students through the fundamentals of animation such as Flash drawing, story boarding, creating layers, key framing, character animation, and creating interactive animation. Mastering the use of these advanced features is considered the industry standard for web animators. By the end of the course, students will have a thorough understanding of Flash basics, plus the know-how to build Flash projects incorporating sound, interactivity, and engaging animations.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or the basic computing skills as described in our self-test.

Adobe Photoshop
NCE 321 • 12 sessions • Fee: $629
Professional artists, amateur photographers and Web novices should know the fundamentals of Photoshop, the most powerful image editing software on the market. Whether you want to learn how to prepare photographs for offset printing or just want to create good-looking scans for your personal homepage, a working knowledge of Photoshop is essential. Topics covered will include the Photoshop work area, image basics, working with selections, working with layers, painting, masks, channels, creating special effects, basic pen tool techniques and creating images for electronic publishing. We will be working in the Windows environment.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or the basic computing skills as described in our self-test.

Designing a Website with Microsoft Publisher

Creating basic Web pages is easy with Microsoft’s page layout program. Learn about Publisher's "WYSIWYG" word processor-like tools, built-in HTML code generator, design considerations, page wizards, page enhancements, debugging and site publication.

Advanced Web Page Design and Site Management with FrontPage

Microsoft FrontPage is a quick, effective way to create and manage professional-quality Internet sites without programming. It makes it easy for new users and professional Web developers to build and maintain well-designed Web sites in no time. Learn how to employ wizards, templates, page editing, graphics, themes and forms to create sophisticated looking frame-based sites. Students will also explore FrontPage’s advanced features, Active X controls, Java applets, plug-ins, PowerPoint animation.
Prerequisite: Experience in basic webpage creation.

Creating Digital Images for Web Design

This course will give students the opportunity to experience and explore the graphics/images software for Web Page Design. The internet has become an integral component of our society, and the Web Page is our road map through it. This course will give students the ability to develop and implement creative ideas and work with the latest in cutting edge technology computer basic imaging software and Adobe ImageReady. This course takes the place of the previous Microsoft Image Composer and GIF Animator courses.

Web Design Project
NCE 325.8 • 2 sessions • Fee: $109
This is the culminating project and a requirement for the Web Design Certificate. Using skills gained from all the courses in the certificate program, students create their own Web page using Publisher, FrontPage, Image Composer and GIF Animator. An instructor is present at all sessions to assist the students and to answer any questions related to the site design.
Prerequisite: Enrollment is limited to those students in the Web Design Certificate Program. All of the courses listed in the Web Design Certificate Program must be completed before a student will be allowed to register.

This course provides an introduction to the most popular word processing program. Streamline workflow by learning shortcuts. Topics include: creating, saving, editing and printing a document, spell check, thesaurus, search and replace, and moving text.
