Graduate Courses Offered:

CED 595 - Project Seminar
CEH 595/ITL 501 - Contemporary Italy
ITL 581 - Independent Study

Final assessment for grading will be based upon completion of the following:

  1. Class, museum and field trip attendance are mandatory.
  2. A daily journal summarizing church/palazzi/museum visits, presentations, workshops and field trips.  Journal should include the fresco technique and fresco detachment process.
  3. A 20-25 page research paper.  The research paper must have a minimum of five references.  Due date for research paper and journal is February 29, 2008.  Papers will be evaluated by Dr. Andrea Fedi of Stony Brook University.  One of the following topics may be chosen for the research paper:

“Every painter paints himself” (Savonarola) – discuss this assertion in relation to any Renaissance artist (painter or sculpture) of your choice.

Emulation of the art and culture of classical antiquity is thought to be central to much of Renaissance art and architecture.  How far do you believe this to be true?  Discuss the classical and the ‘anti-classical’ in the art that you have seen.

With reference to all areas of study encompassed in this program discuss the importance of tradition, and the reworking and revisiting of centuries-old traditions in Italian culture.

Is there such a thing as ‘Italian Culture’ or is that culture defined and separated by regionalism?  With reference to all areas of this program – from wine and cuisine to the visual arts – discuss the differences and the unifying characteristics you have observed.

Other topic with the approval of Dr. Andrea Fedi.
