SPD Fall 2008 Academic Calendar
This calendar addresses SPD students only. It is
not for undergraduates or for students matriculated in the Graduate
School or HSC. This calendar was accurate as of 5/2/08. It is subject to changes and updates.
September
Sept. 2, Tues. First day of Mon. - Fri. classes on-campus.
First day of SPD Online courses.
Late registration begins; a $40 late fee applies to all students who are not enrolled in at least one course before Sept. 2.
Sept. 4, Thurs. Last day to add SPD Online nine-week classes. All adds must be processed by the close of the business day (4:00 pm).
Last day of waitlist operation for SPD Online courses. Reminder: Students who place themselves on a waitlist are responsible for any Tuition Liability incurred if they are enrolled into the course. Students are e-mailed once they are enrolled; however, due to potential e-mail delivery problems, students should monitor their waitlist status using SOLAR. If students change their intent to enroll, they MUST DROP themselves from the waitlist.

Sept. 6, Sat. First day of Saturday SPD classes. Saturday classes 'in session.' All deadline dates apply.
Sept. 8, Mon. Last day to drop a class or withdraw from the University without tuition liability. Dropping/withdrawing from classes must be done via the SOLAR System before the close of the business day (4:00 pm). (SPD students are able to drop to zero credits/units via SOLAR.)
Last day students can place themselves on a waitlisted course (exception: SPD Online courses--see Sept. 2). Sept. 15, Mon. Last day to drop or withdraw from the University without a "W" (withdraw) recorded on student's record. Tuition liability applies. All drops/withdrawals must be processed by the close of the business day (4:00pm). After this date, SPD students may continue to withdraw using the SOLAR System until Nov. 3 (exception: See Sept. 22 for SPD Online courses); a "W" (withdraw) will be recorded. Tuition liability applies. (NOTE: SPD Students MUST withdraw themselves using SOLAR; petitions will not be accepted until after the Nov. 3 deadline.)
Last day to swap courses "without a petition." If student reduces credit load, tuition liability will apply. All swaps must be processed by the close of the business day (4:00pm).
Sept. 16-22, Tues.-Mon. For swaps between these dates, SPD students must petition the School of Professional Development (SPD). If student reduces credit load after Sept. 8, tuition liability will apply. (A record of "W" will be applied to the student's record. NO petitions for swapping will be processed after Sept. 22.)
Sept. 22, Mon. Last day to add classes (excluding SPD Online courses; see Sept. 4 entry). End of late registration. All changes must be processed by the close of the business day (4:00pm).
Last day to drop/withdraw from SPD Online courses. (All other SPD courses, see Nov. 3 entry.) "W"/Withdraw will be recorded. Tuition Liability remains applicable. All drops/withdrawals must be processed by the close of the business day (4:00pm).
Sept. 26, Fri., Close of Business (4:00pm). Deadline for Fall degree and certificate candidates to apply for graduation. SPD students MUST apply for graduation whether they plan to attend Commencement ceremonies or not. If a student does not apply for graduation, the degree or certificate will NOT be conferred.
Graduation applications received by SPD after the published deadline will not be evaluated until all other candidates for graduation have been processed. This may result in a significant delay.
Candidates for graduation must apply online via the SOLAR System; go to Students Records & Registration > Degree Progress/Graduation > Apply for Graduation.
Sept. 29, Mon. Rosh Hashanah (Observed)--No classes after 5:00pm.
Sept. 30-Oct. 1, Tues-Wed. Rosh Hashanah (Observed)--Classes are not in session.
October
Oct. 1, Wed. Rosh Hashanah (Observed)--Classes are not in session.
Oct. 8, Wed. Yom Kippur (Observed)--No classes after 5:00pm.
Oct. 9, Thurs. Yom Kippur (Observed)--No classes in session.
November
Nov. 1, Sat. Last day for removal of "I"/Incomplete grades from the Spring and Summer 2008 terms. After this date, all "I"/Incompletes will revert to "I/F". The "F" is then calculated into the student's GPA.
Nov. 3, Mon. Last day to drop/withdraw from one or all courses (excluding SPD online/EEP courses); “W” will be recorded. Petition is NOT required. Student may drop/withdraw from all courses on the SOLAR System. See Tuition Liability schedule. After this date, students must petition to withdraw. All drops/withdrawals must be processed by the close of the business day (4:00pm).
Last day of SPD Online courses.
Nov. 8 , Sat. Last day of SPD's Saturday classes. Students taking Saturday classes offered from other departments (that is, courses that do not have a "CE_" designator) will follow the Registrar's schedule.
Nov. 10, Mon. (Tentative; subject to change). Advance registration tentatively set to begin for Winter and Spring 2009 terms. Go to the Registrar's website for enrollment schedule: http://www.stonybrook.edu/registrar. Course listings and enrollment appointment information will be posted on the SPD website prior to registration.
Nov. 27-29, Thurs.-Sun. Thanksgiving Break. NO classes in session.
December
Dec. 15, Mon. Correction Day: Classes follow a Thursday schedule.
Last day of class for any courses that are held Mon. through Fri.
Dec. 21, Sun. University Graduation Ceremony. Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees and Advanced Graduate Certificates awarded.
Dec 17-23, Wed.-Tues. Final Exam week. Finals held for Mon. through Fri. courses.
Dec. 20, Sat. Saturday finals held during regularly scheduled class time.
Dec. 23, Tues. End of term; last day of Finals.
