Science & Technology Entry Program

 

 

Overview

STEP (Science and Technology Entry Program) is a New York State Education Department effort which began in 1986 to encourage and prepare more underrepresented minorities and low income secondary school students for entry into scientific, technical, health, and health related professions, including many areas where licensure is required.  The program at Stony Brook offers enrichment experiences through the exposure to the University’s rich academic resources.

 

Selection Criteria

         New York State resident

         Member of defined ethnic minority or student who meets the economic criteria

         Student who shows ability or potential for college level study

 

Services

Academic enrichment, tutoring, supportive counseling, laboratory experiences, and opportunities to explore scientific research are offered to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors through:

  1. A network of STEP clubs and advisors at participating schools
  2. A residential summer program at the campus and fall and spring programs for:

         Lab exploration in marine and health sciences, geosciences, anatomy, computer science and engineering

         SAT preparation

         College-credit courses

         Internships

         Mentoring

3.     The Parent Advisory Council—a support group.

Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program

                                                           

Overview

The goal of the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) is to promote academic excellence and to provide support services for its participants.  The mandate of this New York State Education Department-funded program is to increase the numbers of underrepresented minority and income-eligible college students pursuing degrees in scientific, technological, health, and health-related fields of study, including many areas where licensure is required.

 

Selection Criteria

         New York State resident

         Member of defined ethnic minority or student who meets the economic criteria

         Full-time matriculating student at the University at Stony Brook

 

Services

         Tutoring/study groups/preparation for professional school exams

         Academic/career advisement

         A pre-freshman summer residential program for credit and academic enrichment

         Pre-professional internship placements at the campus, the University’s Hospital and Health Sciences Center, and in the community

         Leadership training through mentoring
