Program Description

Earn six to nine academic credits through a 4-week immersion in the study of the French language and culture. The program uses an active communicative educational method in a small class setting that combines the acquisition of the structures of the language with everyday communication situations.

Montpellier, with a population of 230,000, is the dynamic captial city of the Languedoc-Roussillon region located in the south of France. Rich in medieval heritage, the city prides itself in having one of the oldest universities in Europe with more than 60,000 students. Montpellier enjoys Mediterranean weather and an exceptional vitality that includes festivals, theater, music, dance, and more. Montpellier is only 3 hours from Paris via train. Both Italy and Spain are also easily accessible.

This SBU summer program, located at the University of Montpellier, grives students the opportunity to study, live, and travel in France while participating in numerous in-the-field educational activities.

Program Highlights

Each Sunday there are full day excursions to visit historical and cultural sites in the Languedoc and Provence regions:

Le Pont-du-Gard
The Camargue region
Nimes
Arles
Les Baux-de-Provence
Les Cevennes
The Roquefort cheese cellars

Students may participate in activities such as wine and cheese tasting, spelunking (exploring caves), hiking & cycling, initiation to traditional folk dancing, beach or inland river swimming, and evenings of French film viewing.

Living Arrangements

Participants may choose between homestay with a French family or dorm living in single rooms at the University of Montpellier. The home-stay option allows students to live with a family in Montpellier. This includes a shared room and breakfast and dinner everyday during the program. Shared apartments are available for an extra cost and this does not inlude meals.

Health Insurance

Stony Brook University offers international health insurance for those who do not have adequate coverage.

Eligibility

All undergraduate college students in good academic standing may apply. Language proficiency is NOT required.

Undergraduate Tuition costs: $181.00/credit for NY residents; $442.00/credit for out-of-state residents

Graduate Tuition costs: $288.00/credit for NY state residents; $455.00/credit for out-of-state residents
