Summer in TANZANIA AN ACADEMIC SAFARI

Program Description
Experience the cultural and natural landscapes of northern Tanzania.
The itinerary includes 5 days at Stony Brook University campus with an intensive classroom introduction to the national language of Tanzania (Kiswahili), Tanzania history and culture and 4 weeks "in country" at four different locations. This latter portion of the schedule will include a six day safari to a number of game parks including: Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengetti.
Schedule & Locations
Week 1: Maji Ya Chai Student Center near Mount Kilimanjaro. In addition to instruction, participants will organize group cultural programs. A one day hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru.
Week 2: Impala hotel, Arusha. Continued classroom instruction, a fieldtrip to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a museum, local markets, and schools.
Week 3: Mto Wa Mbu village in Maasailand on the outskirts of Lake Manyara National Park. Completion of classroom instruction.
Week 4: Six day tented Safari to the National Parks. Group departure from Arusha to Amsterdam for connecting flight to JFK.

Living Arrangements
Accomodations and meals are included. All sites are secure and sanitary.
Health Insurance
Stony Brook University offers international health insurance for those who do not have adequate coverage.
Eligibility
All undergraduate students in good academic standing may apply. Language proficiency is NOT required.
Program and Tuition Fees
Program fees: Approximately $2,500.* Includes room and board while in Tanzania, all ground transportation, and six day safari.
*Does not include airfare, visas, administrative fees and medical insurance
Undergraduate Tuition costs: $181.00/credit for NY residents; $442.00/credit for out-of-state residents
