At Stony Brook University responsible environmental stewardship is in our DNA. In 1967 Stony Brook professor of biology and marine sciences Charles Wurster founded the Environmental Defense Fund. His legacy flourishes today on campus through our commitment to environmentally sound practices.
Stony Brook is at the vanguard of the sustainability movement. Nowhere is that more apparent than at Stony Brook Southampton, our oceanfront campus totally dedicated to environmental sustainability. But our commitment to a green future is evident everywhere on our 1,400 acres: from reducing our carbon footprint, to advocating recycling and using recycled materials whenever possible, to promoting alternatively fueled transportation.
In the words of Stony Brook University President Shirley Strum Kenny, "The environment and sustainability are the most critical issues for the 21st century." This Web site highlights many of our successful environmental initiatives and provides important information about our ongoing programs.
