Amy Yopp Sullivan is an Associate
Professor in the Department of Theatre Arts, specializing in the
field of dance, with emphasis on performance and choreography.
Her research and creative work focus on the topic of Physical Intelligence: “the
dynamic interplay of creativity, imagination and critical thinking,
revealed through physical presence, action and performance” (1997,
Sullivan).
Sullivan has received the President and Chancellor awards for
teaching excellence from SUNY and is a past recipient of a national
Eli Lily Endowment Teaching Fellowship. Sullivan’s creative
work has been presented at international, national and regional
professional venues as well as numerous site-specific locations
throughout the world. She was selected as one of the top 250 “most
skilled and experienced artists in communities” by the MidAtlantic
Arts Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. She was
honored as the Woman of the Year in the Arts by the town of Brookhaven
in New York and was a recipient of the Ethel Martus Lawther Alumni
Award from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where
she received her MFA. Sullivan also holds a graduate degree from
Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, with emphasis on education
and theology.
Sullivan’s artistic and educational work has received funding
and/or support from the New York State Council for the Arts,
The New York Foundation for the Arts, the Herman Goldman Foundation,
Chase Manhattan Bank Restart program, JP Morgan Chase Restart
Grant,
The Greater Port Jefferson Arts Council, the East End Arts Council,
The Huntington Arts Council, the United University Professionals
Union, the Village of Port Jefferson, the Town of Brookhaven,
Suffolk County Cultural and Economic Development, Suffolk County
Legislature,
Long Island Maritime Museum, Long Island Seaport and Ecological
Center, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
In October 2003, Sullivan will be traveling to
Portugal to present at the International Conference on Dance in
Community. And, in
the fall of 2003, Sullivan will launch “Project Courage”,
developing body narratives and creative work with professional,
educational and national communities for the next two years. She
is Executive and Artistic Director of The Sullivan Dance Project,
a university endorsed project which links professional, educational
and community interests through collaborative efforts in the arts.
