Timothy Q. Duong
Researcher Tim obtained his M.S. in Physical Chemistry (1996) and his Ph.D. in the filed of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) from Washington University in St. Louis (May 1998). DW-MRK is a novel imaging methodology in which brain injuries (such as stroke, trauma, and seizure) can be readily detected within a few minutes following injuries. It is currently the best non-invasive imaging technique to visualize a variety of brain injuries and is widely used in clinical settings. His research focused on understanding the biophysical and psychological mechanism(s) of the DW-MRI contrast. Based on this work, Tim was awarded the Young Investigator Rabi Award by the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine in 1998. After finishing graduate work, Tim was awarded with a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Health to pursue research on functional magnetic resonance imaging at the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research in the University of Minnesota (www.cmrr.umn.edu). He is currently a research instructor at the Center. His recent research focuses on the development and improvement of functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for non-invasively imaging brain functions in humans and animal models. These functional MRI techniques had made and continue to make striking advances toward our understanding of human brain functions. However, the hemodynamic and metabolic responses underlying the signal contrast mechanism(s) of these functional MRI techniques remain poorly understood and, thus, their potentials are not yet fully realized. Tim's main interest is to develop a better understanding of the biophysical and physiological bases of these functional MRI signal contrasts.

Physician - After graduating from the Honors College, I attended medical and graduate school at Stony Brook in the MD/PhD program. I completed my graduate training in Pharmacology in May of 2001 and completed medical school in May of 2003. I am currently a 1st year pediatrics resident also at Stony Brook. I guess Stony Brook has been unsuccessful at getting rid of me. When I finish residency, I will have spent a total of 16 years at Stony Brook. I am considering staying to do a fellowship in pediatrics. That would add an additional 3 years. On a personal note, I recently (May 25th 2003) married a wonderful woman name Jun. She is a 4th year medical student at Downstate in Brooklyn and she is applying for a residency position at Stony Brook.

Medical Director - I married a wonderful man, Atul Kumar Singh, on September 4, 1999. The reception was at Stony Brook's Three Village Inn. He is a marine engineer from outside of New Delhi , India who came to the USA to do his MBA. We met in '98. He is a VP at Deutsche Bank and President of Singhwoldwide. I graduated SUNY Downstate Medical School cum laude and a member of the national medical honor society, AOA, in '98. I began working the pharmaceutical industry in lieu of a surgical career and am currently a Director at a medical education/communication company which caters to pharmaceutical and biotech companies. My husband and I also run an Internet-based private.

Research Scientist - Since graduation, I married my college sweetheart Tamila in the NY blizzard of 1996 (January 7th), and we are expecting our first child around the 2004 New Year. I entered graduate school at Stony Brook in 1994, and received my Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology in May of 2001. I am currently a Research Scientist in the Department of Virology at the New York State Institute for Basic Research in Staten Island.
