Reduced Course Load

U.S. F-1 regulations require international students to enroll and complete a full course of study each fall and spring semester. For undergraduate students full-time is defined as 12 credit hours each semester. For graduate students full-time is defined as 9 credit hours. A reduced course load may be authorized by VIS if you are in your last semester and taking the necessary number of credits needed to complete all degree requirements.

Students may be eligible for a reduced course load for other, less-frequently used reasons - primarily medical - with documentation from a licensed medical doctor or licensed clinical psychologist.

Eligibility:

  • You may be eligible to register for a reduced courseload if it is your last semester and you need fewer credits to complete your program. If a reduced courseload is authorized for this reason, you MUST graduate at the end of that particular term - failure to do so could jeopardize your F-1 status.
  • Reduced Course Load requests (except for those related to medical reasons) must be submitted by the first day of the semester or by no later than add/drop.
  • Prior to VIS processing your request, your grades for the current semester must be posted and you must be registered for the following semester.
  • If a medical reason causes you to withdraw from some or all of your classes, please discuss this first with your International Student Advisor.

Note:Part-time registration without VIS approval is a violation of your F-1 status and will be reported in SEVIS accordingly.
