UUP Probationary Appointment Guidelines

A probationary appointment is an appointment for a period of one year which must be granted to a professional employee holding a professional title in which permanent appointment may be granted when the employee is appointed to a different professional title in which permanent appointment may be granted, or when the employee is appointed to a professional title listed in Appendix A, Article XI of the Policies of the Board of Trustees.

  • Supervisor prepares a performance program and discusses program with employee within 30 days of the start of the probationary appointment.
  • Supervisor and employee sign and date performance program. A copy is sent to Human Resource Services (HRS) to be placed in the employee's personnel file.
  • HRS sends a monthly report to VP Coordinators listing appointment end dates and appointment status (Temp, Term, Probationary) for their employees. Review the monthly report for the expiration date (end date) of the probationary appointment.
  • Supervisor prepares a probationary review for the employee prior to the end of the probationary period. This review must include the supervisor's recommendation to reappoint or to return employee to former title, and a performance evaluation. If you are recommending reappointment, a new performance program is also required.
  • A professional employee holding permanent appointment in a professional title who completes a probationary appointment in a different title must be granted a permanent appointment in the different title only and shall not retain the permanent appointment in the former title.
  • A professional employee holding a term appointment in a professional title who completes a probationary appointment in a different title must be granted a new term appointment in the different title only and shall not retain the term appointment in the former title.
  • VP Coordinator must submit a PeopleSoft change form with the supervisor's recommendation, performance evaluation and performance program to HRS at least one month prior to the probationary end date.

Note: If a recommendation to reappoint or deny reappointment in the probationary title is not sent to Human Resource Service prior to the end of the probationary period, Human Resource Services is required under the Policies of the Board of Trustees to reappoint the employee to the new professional title at the same appointment status (permanent or term) as held in former title.
